Sun Microsystems, Inc. today announced that E-Plus, Germany's third largest cell phone provider with more than 8.2 million subscribers, chose the Sun Java Enterprise System to replace its current infrastructure. By utilising the Java Enterprise System, E-Plus will be able to realise significant cost savings by lowering licensing, maintenance and development costs. Additionally, E-Plus will now be able to take advantage of drastically shortened product introduction cycles of new and innovative data services.
"By leveraging the Sun Java Enterprise System, we were able to significantly reduce our operating costs," said Thorsten Dirks, Chief Officer, Innovations, IT and Operations, E-Plus. "In addition, we benefited from the fact that we no longer have to deal with complicated software license regulations and servicing contracts."
The Java Enterprise System will guarantee the successful operation of one of the most popular services of the E-Plus product portfolio, the multimedia platform ' i-mode,' which is entirely based on open standards and Java technology. The system will also ensure the availability of various enterprise-internal services via the E-Plus Intranet. Currently, E-Plus is using the following key components of the Java Enterprise System: the Java System Messaging Server, the Java System Application Server and the Java System Directory Server as well as cluster and portal functionalities.
E-Plus is planning to introduce additional mobile services shortly.
