East Africa braces for switchover

Mobile phone operators in East Africa will be some of the biggest beneficiaries of the planned switch from analogue to digital broadcasting set for next year, reports The East African.

Kenya and Uganda have set 2012 as the deadline for migrating from analogue broadcasting ahead of the 2015 global deadline.

This will result in a new revenue stream for East African governments, as has been done in other parts of the world. In the US, for instance, $20 billion was realised from auction of the spectrum to mobile operators.

Ghana gets MTN service centres

MTN Ghana has opened the first of five customer service centres in Accra, states Ghana News Agency.

The centres aim to serve as sales points where customers could access MTN products and services.

Abu Mohammed, senior manager Branch Network Services, says MTN Ghana decided to move its business to its customers' doorsteps through establishment of more customer service centres this year for easy access and convenience.

UK confronts Egypt over networks abuse

The UK government has complained to the Egyptian authorities about alleged abuse of mobile phone networks in the country, says FT.com.

The British government's intervention highlighted an escalating confrontation between the Cairo authorities and Vodafone and France Telecom, which are facing the possibility of damage to reputation after carrying pro-government text messages on their mobile networks in Egypt.

Some texts on Vodafone's network appeared to urge Mubarak's supporters to confront the anti-government protesters.
