Econet unveils Zim service
Wireless has rolled out a voice over Internet protocol (VOIP) service to Zimbabwean subscribers, Newsday reports.
George Barbaressos, Econet Wireless' commercial director, says the country faces high installation costs, unavailability of lines, poor network coverage and ageing infrastructure.
It is hoped that the VOIP service will alleviate some of the cost pressures on Zimbabwe's poor infrastructure.
According to Tech Zim, Econet is not the first telco to introduce VOIP services into Zimbabwe. Internet service providers (ISPs) that already offer VOIP include Gigatel, Telco, PowerTel, Africom, TelOne and Brodacom.
Barbaressos would not say what tariffs would be charged for using the service; he only promised they would be much lower than regular GSM tariffs.
