EDS awarded $258m Pentagon renovation contract

Two-year programme designed to upgrade military communications infrastructure
Johannesburg, 24 Apr 2003

EDS has announced a contract to upgrade the Pentagon`s Information Technology (IT) infrastructure under the Command Communications Survivability Program (CCSP). The work will be performed over a two-year period and is valued at $258 million before award fees.

The CSSP upgrade is designed to ensure the survivability, redundancy, recoverability and security of the Pentagon IT infrastructure. It covers networks, data storage, and voice and messaging systems at the Pentagon and selected facilities.

Spurred by the 11 September 2001 attack on the Pentagon, the Department of Defence launched an intensive effort to ensure the survivability of the Pentagon`s voice and data network communications and mainframe processing capability.

"We are extremely pleased to have been selected by the Department of Defence for this critical project so vital to our national defence," said Al Edmonds, president of EDS U.S. Government Solutions. "Coupled with our other work to support the department, EDS is continuing to play a major role in ensuring our armed forces have a seamless and secure means of communicating."

Contract scope

The EDS-led team will provide a customised solution to deliver five key outcomes: survivability, manageability, flexibility, availability and security. EDS will employ an integrated product team approach, using proven systems engineering methodology and input from all teaming and vendor technology providers, to complete the development, transition and deployment of the solution. This approach delivers a "low-risk" implementation and affords the department maximum flexibility to take advantage of new and emerging technologies.

The following teaming partners will support EDS to address the Pentagon`s current and future IT needs:

* Verizon Federal, Inc, for survivable networks and voice communication;

* Northrop Grumman Information Technology for data centre solutions;

* Raytheon Corporation for the security architecture;

* Harris Communications for network and systems engineering;

* CACI for modelling and simulation;
