EDS, Sun Microsystems, Vignette enable secure access to enterprise information

International government agency leverages jointly developed secure enterprise information portal solution to better serve constituents, increase productivity
Johannesburg, 26 Jun 2002

EDS, Sun Microsystems and Vignette Corp have launched a new joint portal solution based on the Sun Open Net Environment (Sun ONE) platform, which offers end-users a single point of entry for enterprise information and rock-solid levels of security.

Designed to help companies and government agencies improve communication and productivity, the new Secure Enterprise Information Portal solution is designed to protect critical information assets, while delivering personalised content from multiple sources to the right audience at the right time via any device. An international government agency is the first entity to leverage this solution to increase operational efficiencies and improve communication among its constituents.

Available today, the joint solution targets the rapidly growing enterprise information portal market and can be easily integrated into existing business systems, scale to address future needs and can withstand strict regulatory requirements-satisfying the most demanding needs of a successful enterprise portal strategy.

"One year ago Sun and EDS announced their Continuum of Services alliance program," said Gartner analyst Laura McLellan. "One of the stated goals was to team up with best-in-class ISVs to develop and deliver fully integrated solutions. This announcement with Vignette is a great example of complementary offerings rigorously tested that all three companies can jointly market, sell and support."

An international government agency deployed a solution based on the Secure Enterprise Information Portal to help revolutionise its government services. This portal project, which was designed and implemented in just four months, consolidates information and services from that government`s 24 departments and delivers it through a single, unified online presence. The resulting Web site is enabling the government to significantly improve service to its citizens, businesses and tourists while increasing staff productivity. In addition to linking the different IT systems of the government agencies, the project also had to deal with the complexity of integrating a number of e-services which the various departments already had launched.

Rock-solid security

The Secure Enterprise Information Portal responds to the heightened security requirements of today`s marketplace, bypassing the level of security provided by traditional portal providers. Bolstered by the Sun ONE architecture, which helps maximise security for Internet-based connections, this single, integrated solution also includes scalable content management applications, privacy, risk management and compliance assessments, as well as single sign-on, encryption and authentication capabilities.

Additional benefits are gained through faster time-to-market and reduced total cost of ownership. The solution has been pre-tested and fully integrated by EDS, Sun and Vignette to enable organisations to avoid the cost of buying point solutions and reduce the complexities associated with independently testing component compatibility. Through its open, standards-based architecture, this solution also allows businesses to cost-effectively unify existing internal portal projects and easily plug in value-added applications and services.

Teamed expertise delivers key business benefits

Leveraging the core competencies of EDS, Sun and Vignette, the Secure Enterprise Information Portal uses the award-winning Vignette V6 Content Suite and Vignette V6 Multisite Content Manager to aggregate existing content that resides in current databases, and then personalise and deliver it to individual, relevant end users. The solution is built on a foundation of Sun`s fully-integrated, open technology platform architecture, comprised of the Sun ONE Application Server, Sun ONE Portal Server, Sun servers and storage systems, and leverages complementary Sun technical consulting, training and support services.

EDS collaborated with Vignette and Sun through EDS` growing Sun ONE practice to contribute expertise in helping mutual clients define, design and execute enterprise portal strategies and provide recognised security and privacy expertise and capabilities to the product`s design and development. The Secure Enterprise Information Portal joins Sun`s growing portfolio of iForce[SM] solutions, which are comprised of proven, best-in-class offerings that can be customized and implemented in less time and with minimal risk.
