EDS Systems has unveiled EcoGauge, a cloud-based carbon tax analytics solution that the company says is SA's first.
The aim of the locally developed tool is to reduce the administrative burden of compliance measurement and reporting.
Francois du Plessis, operations director at EDS Systems, says the Carbon Tax Act’s ‘if you pollute, you pay’ approach means it’s critical for businesses to monitor and understand their carbon emissions in order to reduce them.
EcoGauge assists with the compulsory greenhouse gas (GHG) reporting by providing a near real-time view on GHG emissions and the effect of a manufacturing process change.
“EcoGauge simplifies carbon monitoring and tax calculations by incorporating the South African Carbon Tax Act's parameters. It considers the South African Carbon Tax framework’s local thresholds and can establish a company’s GHG reporting on a month-to-month basis,” says Eckart Zollner, head of business development at EDS Systems.
The tool is cloud-based and enables companies to ‘plug in’ their product usage or process data and generate a report that breaks down their liability in terms of the Carbon Tax Act.
“Once the tax liability status has been determined, the tool calculates a carbon tax liability amount, taking into consideration any allowance reductions,” adds Zollner.
With the second phase of the Carbon Tax Law fast approaching and the current deferral in phase one about to end, organisations in both the mining and manufacturing industries wil have to step up carbon tax compliance. “We should expect a big shift in the supply chains as companies choose more carbon-conscious partners,” says Zollner.
