Education Trust now mobile thanks to Sahara

Johannesburg, 09 Jun 2006

Sahara Computers has pledged its support towards the improvement of education in SA. The ICT supplier recently handed over a laptop to members of the South African Democracy Education Trust (SADET) and reaffirmed its commitment towards the objectives of the organisation.

Dr Essop Pahad, of the Office of the Presidency, is the chairperson of SADET. The body was established as a project trust tasked with the mission to examine and analyse events leading to the negotiated settlement and democracy in SA.

The focus is on events leading to the banning of the liberation movements; the various strategies and tactics adopted in pursuit of the democratic struggle; the events leading to the adoption of the negotiation strategy and the dynamics underpinning the negotiations process between 1990 and 1994.

SADET's "Road to Democracy in South Africa" Project will result in at least five academic volumes covering the previously un-recorded history of the liberation struggle. Additional publications are edited versions of interviews conducted with key (and less well-known) actors in the country's political history. These provide the basis for school texts on the country's political history.

The research has also yielded a considerable amount of archival material in the form of taped interviews that will be placed in various repositories such as the National Archives. This will become a rich source of material for future scholars.

Sahara Computers, alongside other corporate sponsors MTN and the Nedbank Group, has thrown its weight behind the SADET initiative. Upon request from one of the members of the Trustees, the company recently donated a laptop that would add mobility to the research process.

"With this level of mobility and infrastructure, researchers can record the results of their research on the spot - such as in libraries and archives - and also communicate away from the office," says Dr Greg Houston, executive director at SADET. "We appreciate the support from corporate sponsors such as Sahara, they play a major role in our efforts to reinforce education through enriched material."

"We are proud to be associated with SADET and its mandate to accurately record the history of the country and pass this knowledge on to future generations. This is a valuable exercise in helping the country towards higher levels of growth and development, and technology is a key factor behind the overall effort. This is a powerful example of the advantage that effective corporate social responsibility from the private sector can have on initiatives designed to build communities and society in general." explains Gary Naidoo, deputy MD at Sahara
