Electronics show draws 130 000

Johannesburg, 05 Jan 2006

About 130 000 attendees and 2 500 exhibitors are expected at the 2006 Consumer Electronics Show (CES) that started today in Las Vegas, Nevada, according to the event organiser.

CES 2006, hosted by the Consumer Electronics Association (CEA), will feature - among other things - the latest in Protocol television, dual-lens cameras, next-generation portable media players and automobile navigation systems.

The event kicked-off with a keynote address from Microsoft chairman Bill Gates, to be followed later in the week by five more keynotes from other industry leaders, including Google co-founder Larry Page and Yahoo chairman and CEO Terry Semel.

The CEA says 199 conferences and 'super-sessions` will take place during the show, which runs until Sunday, adding that the exhibitions will cover more than one-and-a-half million square feet of exhibit space.

It confirms that delegates from 110 different countries will attend the event.

Four award ceremonies are scheduled, recognising the most innovative products in a variety of divisions.

In its 39-year history the event has introduced the world to cutting-edge products such as the VCR (1970), the CD player (1981) and plasma TV (2001).
