Elexir upgrades Computicket network

Johannesburg, 18 Mar 1999

Elexir Technology Holdings Ltd, listed on the Industrial-Electronics and Electrical sector of the JSE, has announced that subsidiary Elexir Computer Services has been awarded a contract to upgrade Computicket`s dial-up system to ISDN infrastructure at its 80 - 85 outlets nationally.

The first order is for the upgrading of Computickets` 20 outlets in Gauteng, comprising 20 routers and 50 terminals.

"The requirement is to install terminals and WAN products at all their outlets nationally. The new terminals will be network computers, running the LINUX operating systems with the Netscape Browser. "This enables them to use their JAVA booking applets at the outlets," explains Elexir Technology Holdings, Seshi Chonco.

"Computicket approached Elexir as it was the only company able to offer a comprehensive integration solution. The existing system host server with its JAVA application had to be integrated and connected to terminals, able to boot up locally without initialising the ISDN call. Since routers carry build-in security features, all bookings, queries and more importantly financial transactions can take place in a protected environment," says Chonco.

The multi-million rand upgrade order, to be rolled out as a staged project, will call for the simultaneous installation of the new ISDN network and the disconnection of the 85 existing Computicket lines it currently leases from Telkom in ensuring continuity of service.
