EMC Corporation, the world`s leading provider of enterprise storage systems and software, today announced it has acquired Conley Corporation, a privately held software company specializing in several important technologies expected to contribute to the development and deployment of EMC Enterprise Storage Networks.
Conley Corporation, based in Cambridge, Massachusetts, is a leader in high-availability, high-performance storage management software for UNIX, Windows NT and other platforms.
EMC PowerPath software, which was co-developed by Conley and EMC, has become one of EMC`s hottest-selling software products since its introduction in February. Conley`s operations will become the EMC Cambridge Software Development Center. Terms of the agreement were not disclosed.
Michael C. Ruettgers, EMC President and CEO, said, "This acquisition will help advance EMC`s multi-year lead in enterprise storage software. As a partner, Conley has demonstrated highly valued capabilities in the effective development and delivery of path management and device driver software solutions. EMC and Conley share a common view of information-centric computing, in which intelligent enterprise storage will continue to play an increasingly strategic role for large organizations that depend on information to run their businesses."
Ric Calvillo, founder and President of Conley Corporation, has been named General Manager of the new EMC Cambridge Software Development Center, which will host the former Conley development activities as well as other EMC software resources over time. "EMC is an ideal fit for rapid growth in the exact target market where our technology is of greatest value to customers," said Calvillo. "Our current work with EMC has demonstrated the value we can create as a team, and we look to accelerate this success as we move forward.
EMC`s financial strength and market execution will help us expand our technology and device driver expertise across multiple platforms and new projects. At a time when speed to market is imperative, EMC will enable us to realize a level of market success far more rapidly than our current team could have attained independently."
EMC PowerPath software, co-developed by Conley with EMC, is the world`s first software product to provide both load balancing and path failover capability for Windows NT and UNIX systems. The software`s load balancing feature increases information access performance by automatically distributing data traffic across all available data paths (up to 32 on a fully configured Symmetrix).
The product`s failover capability provides a higher degree of business continuance by eliminating the possibility of application failure due to a server data path failure. Data availability is improved by automatically and non-disruptively re-directing the workload from a failed path to an alternative data path. EMC PowerPath is available on Windows NT, HP-UX, Sun Solaris and IBM AIX servers.
Fueled by the growth of its suite of EMC Enterprise Storage software products, EMC has recorded five consecutive quarters of over 30% year-over-year growth in both revenue and net income. Revenue from software more than doubled in 1997 to $177 million and is expected to more than double again in 1998 to $400 million -- making EMC one of the fastest-growing major software companies in the world.
Founded in 1992, Conley Corporation quickly became a leader in high-availability, high-performance storage management software for UNIX, Windows NT and other platforms. Conley designs, develops, and markets products that improve enterprise-wide data access and manageability. These products are recognized for their innovative features, high quality, and cross platform support. More than 50,000 copies of Conley software have been shipped worldwide.
EMC Corporation, a Fortune 500 company based in Hopkinton, Massachusetts, is the world`s technology and market leader in the rapidly growing market for intelligent enterprise storage systems, software and services.
