EMC announces support for Microsoft Exchange Server 2003

Integrated information management solutions deliver backup and recovery, archiving records management and compliance functionality to better manage Exchange Server 2003 data.
Johannesburg, 11 Nov 2003

EMC, a leader in information storage, has announced support for Microsoft Exchange Server 2003, Microsoft`s messaging and collaboration platform. The company has also unveiled new best practices, developed with Microsoft, that help companies better manage their Exchange Server 2003 information throughout its lifecycle.

According to Alex Robertson, Technology Solutions Group Manager, EMC SA, EMC and its new software division, LEGATO, have introduced integrated information management solutions that deliver backup and recovery, archiving, records management and compliance functionality to better manage Exchange Server 2003 data.

"EMC has integrated LEGATO`s software solutions for information protection, automated availability and messaging management with EMC automated networked storage systems and software, providing Microsoft customers with a reliable information management and protection solution," says Robertson.

To consolidate Exchange infrastructures and migrate from Exchange 5.5 to Exchange Server 2003, EMC worked with Microsoft to develop an EMC Proven Solution that provides Exchange Server 2003 customers with a build-as-you-grow infrastructure that starts with a base storage package.

"Once Exchange Server 2003 is consolidated onto a storage area network (SAN), customers can easily deploy EMC and LEGATO software for high-availability and improved business continuity," says Robertson. "This gives customers the ability to better manage information throughout its lifecycle and includes long-term archiving for regulatory requirements."

EMC has also worked with Microsoft to enhance capabilities that utilise Exchange Server 2003 and Windows Server 2003 for Volume Shadow Copy Service (VSS) to ensure tight integration. EMC CLARiiON and Symmetrix Integration Modules for Exchange, which integrate EMC`s replication technology with Microsoft`s development of VSS, are key components of the solution.

"The EMC solution enables customers to reduce backup and recovery times from hours to minutes and reduce complexity of the backup and recovery process," says Robertson. "It also allows customers to better utilise and manage storage assets and maintain a common infrastructure to support enhanced Exchange functionality."

The importance of Exchange-based information changes dramatically throughout its lifecycle, adds Robertson. "EMC delivers proven networked storage solutions with backup and archival software that enable customers to adopt a tiered approach that allows varied service level options depending on the value of an e-mail at any point in time.

"Together, EMC and Microsoft provide a highly available, manageable messaging and collaboration infrastructure."
