EMC Centera awarded `best infrastructure technology` for life sciences companies

By EMC Southern Africa
Johannesburg, 28 Nov 2002

EMC Corporation today announced that the EMC Centera content addressed storage (CAS) solution received "Best of Show" honours at the BioIT World Conference & Expo, the premier event for life sciences professionals to evaluate advanced IT solutions and bioinformatics.

EMC Centera was recognised as "the IT infrastructure technology that will have the most significant and measurable impact on the life sciences sector by enabling scientists and other industry professionals to accelerate and streamline the critical research and development process".

"Centera`s content addressing makes it an online storage solution that provides content immutability and authentication features we have not seen before in any storage medium," said John Russell, Executive Editor, Bio-IT World, and Project Manager for the "Best of Show" Award.

"Centera content addressed storage is a truly unique and innovative breakthrough in life sciences IT infrastructure because it is self-managing, self-healing, and massively scalable. We believe Centera will help organisations within the life sciences sector improve time-to-market and reduce the costs associated with managing the millions of critical documents created from drug discovery to launch."

The EMC Centera CAS solution enables life sciences companies to meet the requirements for Good Clinical Practices, Good Laboratory Practices, Good Manufacturing Practices and FDA 21 CFR Part 11. The world`s first CAS solution, EMC Centera employs breakthrough content addressing technology to provide online access and assured long-term content authenticity for the storage of "fixed content" - long-lasting, unchanging digital objects - such as drug discovery research, electronic business documents, clinical trial results and e-submissions.

Introduced in April, the EMC Centera CAS solution is fast-becoming the first cross-vendor, cross-industry unifying storage platform for the myriad of fixed content management applications. Centera offers the unique blend of centralised management, ensured content uniqueness, and scalability from terabyte- to petabyte-sized environments with almost zero additional management overhead. This value proposition has already prompted more than 50 of the world`s leading application providers to integrate their own solutions with Centera content addressed storage.

EMC`s Vice-President and General Manager of Content Addressed Storage, Tom Heiser, said: "Through Automated Networked Storage, EMC`s goal is to unify information infrastructures, providing one automated environment to handle the diverse business needs of our life sciences customers` varied information types. With the Centera CAS solution, EMC has redefined what an end-to-end, integrated networked storage solution can do for organisations to improve research collaboration and speed drugs to market."
