Developed to meet an increased demand for enterprise storage EMC has doubled the mirrored capacities of its 3330/5330 and 3430/5430 Symmetrix systems, with the incorporation of new 18GB 3,5 inch drive technology. According to Hugh Wason, country manager, EMC SA, the increased capacity will enable users to easily accommodate applications such as data warehouses and enterprise resource planning on EMC entry- and mid-level systems. The new systems significantly expand the capabilities of the 3330/5330 and 3430/5430 upping them to 572GB and 1718GB raw capacity respectively for both mainframes and open systems. In terms of cache sizes, the mirrored 18GB drives have the same minimum cache requirements as the mirrored 9GB systems. "Although the exact cost of ownership is unique to customer applications and business requirements" says Wason, "we expect the 18GB solutions to be priced below the equivalent capacity of 9GB mirrored solutions and below 9GB RAID S solutions." In addition, the cabinets utilise floor space better, consume less electricity and generate less heat, factors that all lower the cost of ownership of the new Symmetrix systems. OEMs Hewlett-Packard, Siemens Nixdorf, Sequent, Silicon Graphics, Unisys, Bull and NCR will be marketing these systems at the same time as EMC.
