Big is big at the moment. This statement may appear painfully obvious but it is also very true. This topic is on the lips of everybody in the IT industry and even those who are not.

How this data is managed, stored and accessed is very important to any business. This was illuminated at the EMC Forum 2012, on Tuesday. The theme of the event was "Transform IT, the business and yourself", with the focus on how cloud, virtualisation and big data solutions can drive transformation of IT infrastructures and revolutionise business operations.

"Cloud will revolutionise the IT industry," said Brian Gallagher, president of EMC's Enterprise Storage Division. "In 10 years, cloud will become the de facto way of delivering IT. EMC is focused on cloud computing and big data. EMC is well positioned to take advantage of the cloud through its capabilities."

Trust

As a storage company, issues of and trust obviously come into play. Gallagher believes trust is one of the largest issues faced in the storage business.

"'Do I trust somebody else with my information?' is the most commonly asked question within a business," said Gallagher. To this end, Gallagher added that EMC was placing an emphasis on trust of its client and was constantly working on improving its trust relationships with its clients.

Privacy

Maintaining a worldwide presence, EMC faces challenges in different countries regarding privacy laws. "There are policies around where data lives. Privacy laws are a challenge for big data analytics, said Gallagher.

In this regard, Gallagher said US federal regulations have assisted in respect to privacy issues as the company works through these regulations in serving its clients.

Looking ahead

Gallagher predicts a strong future for EMC. "The company will be twice that it currently is in a decade. EMC is investing billions of dollars towards its goal of becoming a technology leader. Its focus on storage and virtual computing positions the company perfectly for the future."
