EMC gained market share, extended lead in third quarter Storage Systems Market

Johannesburg, 15 Dec 2003

EMC Corporation extended its lead over Hewlett-Packard and IBM as the world`s #1 provider of external RAID disk storage systems and networked storage systems in the third quarter compared with the second quarter of 2003, according to IDC`s Worldwide Quarterly Disk Storage Systems Tracker, released today.

According to IDC estimates, EMC was #1 with 21.4% revenue share in the worldwide external RAID storage systems market, compared with 18.8% share in the third quarter of 2002. EMC grew external RAID revenue at 20.5% year-over-year, outpacing this market, which IDC said grew 5.8% during the same period. (External RAID storage includes all controller-based disk storage systems that are not embedded inside servers.) In networked storage (NAS and open SAN), which represents a rapidly growing portion of worldwide disk storage sales, EMC ranked #1 in the third quarter with 28.9% revenue share, up from 27.8% in the third quarter of 2002.

In announcing the results, IDC noted, "Among the top 5 suppliers, Dell and EMC posted the strongest year-over-year factory revenue growth during 3Q03, with 22.9% and 20.5% gain respectively . . . .EMC also had the largest year-over-year market share gain of 2.2 points. Dell moved into the number 4 position on strong sales of products OEM`ed from EMC . . . ."

David Goulden, EMC`s Executive Vice President of Global Marketing and New Business Development, said, "The latest market share estimates from IDC confirm the strong customer demand for EMC`s new Symmetrix DMX and CLARiiON CX families of networked storage systems. We have strengthened and broadened our product line and we continue to gain share. It`s clear that EMC and Dell are the fastest-growing players in the disk storage systems market, and this demonstrates what happens when the best technology is delivered to customers by the best sales and distribution forces in the industry."
