EMC, LEGATO and Nortel announce business continuity solution

Johannesburg, 30 Apr 2003

EMC, LEGATO Systems, and Nortel Networks have announced a highly available enterprise business continuity solution that enables multiple data centres to act as one to help keep businesses running.

In the event of a disaster, says Alex Robertson, Technical Solutions Group Manager EMC SA, transactions are automatically routed to an alternate site with no need for manual restore or restart procedures, greatly reducing time to recovery, lowering costs and reduce the risk of human error.

He says that as environments become increasingly complex, customers require heterogeneous data centre solutions that can be linked across substantial distances. This business continuity solution provides a geographically dispersed, high-availability architecture for application, server, storage and transport. Customers can benefit from synchronous replication over extended distances with minimal impact on overall application performance.

"Enterprises increasingly need to find ways to integrate storage networks and crucial business data across the wide area network to support business continuity, disaster recovery and compliance with government regulations," says Robertson.

"The combined, tested offering from Nortel Networks, EMC and LEGATO provides a best-of-breed approach to simplifying the complex problem of tying multiple SANs (storage area networks) together between multiple corporate sites.

"By bringing the three product sets together in a cohesive manner, deploying business continuity and disaster recovery strategies just got a lot easier for enterprises and service providers."

The pre-tested solution includes EMC Symmetrix and CLARiiON networked storage systems, EMC SRDF (Symmetrix Remote Data Facility) remote replication software, LEGATO Automated Availability Manager (AAM) for EMC SRDF and Nortel Networks OPTera Metro 5200 Multiservice Platform.

Integrated through the EMC Developers Program, LEGATO AAM for EMC SRDF combines functions of AAM with EMC SRDF software for full site protection of system resources, data and applications; planned or unplanned downtime; site failure or disaster; and automatic (or manual) site-to-site failover and fail-back.

EMC Symmetrix and CLARiiON networked storage systems support LEGATO high availability clusters managed over distance through a single LEGATO AAM console.

"Customers have the opportunity to gain significant implementation, administration and performance benefits by leveraging the heterogeneous support of LEGATO AAM with the remote replication functionality of EMC SRDF while running protocols across Nortel Networks DWDM (dense wavelength division multiplexing) links at distances of up to 200 kilometres," says Robertson.

"Furthermore, the bandwidth of Nortel Networks DWDM-based OPTera Metro 5200 platform gives this solution great scalability."
