EMC Corporation has introduced a new storage subsystem which, by vitue of being able to accommodate up to 128 47-gigabyte disk drives, is able to hold as much as six terabytes of data in a single unit.Hugh Wason, country manager of EMC SA, says this development has doubled the maximum capacity of its high-end Symmetrix 5700/3700 product. "The new model is the highest capacity disk storage system in the world and the first to implement 47-gigabyte disk drives," he says."These record capacities illustrate EMC`s role in helping businesses take control of the information juggernaut and use its momentum to their advantage. As the amount of information considered critical to business grows beyond all forecasts, demand for an open platform for high-performance, consolidated storage for all types of information across the enterprise escalates."According to International Data Corporation (IDC), the need for storage capacity will continue to increase at a compound annual rate of more than 95 percent through the end of the decade. John McArthur, director of storage systems research, IDC, comments, "the efficiencies gained from advances in disk density will help EMC satisfy demand for greater and greater amounts of storage. This announcement builds on EMC`s ability to support large-scale data consolidation efforts and an increasing number of data-hungry applications."To date, EMC has shipped more than 12 petabytes (12 000 terabytes) of capacity on its Symmetrix enterprise storage systems."Symmetrix subsystems are used by many leading organisations - including the world`s 20 largest telecommunications companies and all 25 of the largest banks in the US - to satisfy the demanding storage requirements of very large database (VLDB), data warehouse, Internet as well as many other information-intensive applications," says Wason.Symmetrix 5700/3700 systems with 47 GB drives are available immediately and continue to provide simultaneous connectivity to all major mainframe, UNIX, NT, AS/400 and other hosts. These storage systems also support all EMC software solutions for information protection, management and sharing.
