Emergia Solutions have signed an agreement with German software company, Dimetis GmbH, to offer a ground-breaking management system for broadcasting networks, OpenPlatform. While telecommunications operators have ample options for management systems, broadcasters have endured high operational costs and an inability to adequately schedule, bill and monitor on their networks.
"It is a complete change from traditional operations of broadcasting networks," says Eugene Smith, Managing Director of Emergia Solutions. "Using the modular OpenPlatform, broadcasters and even carriers in general can develop an umbrella view of their whole network, enabling monitoring of the different elements, scheduling broadcast feeds and managing the bandwidth to ensure that capacity usage is optimized".
Carriers such as Telkom and Sentech can create broadcasting feeder networks using ATM or fibre, complete with the ability to create a booking system for broadcasters and users of ad hoc feeds. An interface can be created where the customers can have online access to book feeds, thus automating the process and ensuring that the carrier`s operational costs are minimized.
In the transition towards Digital Terrestrial Television (DTT), with its inherent regional broadcasting qualities, terrestrial feeds will become more relevant. Currently, however, the lack of management on these feeds increases costs and makes the service inefficient. Emergia Solutions addresses this problem using OpenPlatform.
According to Smith, "the software is modular, and includes modules for management of resources, for monitoring, for scheduling, for billing, etc. Reports can be generated, enabling a high-level management review."
The billing system can be integrated into any existing billing system, and because the software is based on open standards, element management systems for the different network components can be integrated into the umbrella view of the network. OpenPlatform can be customized to address ATM, fibre, satellite and digital terrestrial networks.
"Dimetis has impressive references, including Broadwing in the United States and Deutsche Telekom and ARD Digital in Europe. We are thus certain that we have aligned ourselves with a market leader and pioneer."
