Empire Medical upgrades network with Unisys Thin-Client Solution

Unisys Corporation today announced that it was selected by Empire Management to provide a thin-client solution that will simplify and reduce Empire`s cost of managing and its business application software by running the software in a centralized, server-based environment.

Based in Syracuse, New York, Empire Medical manages Riverfront Medical Services, P.C., a medical practice specializing in occupational health and independent medical exams for many of the top companies in New York. Empire Medical needed to replace more than 100 character-based dumb terminals with a system that supported online communications and Windows-based applications.

The Empire Medical installation is one more example of Unisys leadership in thin-client computing -- recently recognized by an Aberdeen Group study: "From Aberdeen`s perspective, Unisys is a leader in multi-user architecture testing and research. At its Thin-Client Solutions Center in Mission Viejo, CA, Unisys is aggressively constructing a knowledge that includes thin-client/server design, benchmarking, sizing, deployment frameworks, and application guidelines. The building of a knowledge bank will address IS buyers` concerns, particularly multi-user-system user counts and application loading. Unisys is most noted for its focus on scaling NT-based servers - the company has demonstrated consistent leadership in this category for the past two years. "

Empire Medical Installation

For nearly 12 years, Empire Medical employees relied on character-based terminals to perform day-to-day operations, which included setting up appointments for clients, accessing customer data and processing reports. Empire Medical decided to move from the character-based terminals to a thin-client computing model to simplify maintenance time and improve cost-efficiency.

Unisys assembled a thin-client solution for Empire Medical that supports its more than 100 employees at twelve remote locations using Unisys WinPath Windows-based terminals connected to two servers. The thin-client solution includes a Unisys Unix database server and a Unisys Windows NT-based server running Citrix Winframe thin-client software.

"The greatest benefit of the Unisys thin-client solution has been the decline in technical administration and maintenance costs," said Tom Blaylock, Senior Systems Analyst/Engineer at Empire Medical. "The solution also provides us with all the functionality of the most innovative applications and technology available today."

"The Unisys thin-client solution supports a server-centric, centrally managed environment that addresses the last key requirement for terminal replacement -- a smooth, low-risk transition from one environment to another," said George Koncikowski, director of Marketing for Thin-Client Solutions, Unisys Computer Systems. "Unisys is focusing its efforts on the thin-client market in recognition of the trend among enterprises to recentralize their operations while capitalizing on the cost advantages and user-friendly environments usually associated with client/server computing."
