Energy saved in data centres affects bottom line

Johannesburg, 18 Jun 2010

Energy efficiency in data centres is now more important than ever before. True to its innovative character, Rittal supplies wide-ranging solutions for energy efficient, safe and high availability IT structures.

The costs of supplying energy to IT components, and cooling them down, are rising all the time - they comprise up to 50% of the IT budget in many instances - and IT departments are becoming more aware of making energy savings.

Alongside servers, the largest sources of wasted energy in data centres are climate control and power supply. Switching over to efficient new systems in these sectors makes a lot of sense. Rittal supports IT managers and operators of data centres with solutions, ensuring IT infrastructures are energy efficient.

In particular, powerful UPSes help to cut costs in the field of power backup. Thousands of rands can be saved over a unit's typical service life, thanks to Rittal UPSes, which have a high operating ratio of up to 95% compared to less efficient systems. The Rittal Battery Manager (RiBat) is an ideal addition. It can extend the battery life of a UPS by up to 30%.

Climate control is the second key area of the energy saving campaign. Thanks to the intelligent use of Rittal cooling solutions, climate control costs can be reduced by as much as half. Rittal analyses, advises and offers an extensive range of cold aisle partitioning, CRAC systems and the Liquid Cooling Package (LCP) high performance air-water heat exchanger. The range of cooling products is rounded off by the IT chiller and free cooling concepts. Customised and efficient climate control concepts for very different requirements can be developed with the aid of this comprehensive approach.

Rittal's CMC-TC (Computer Multi Control - Top Concept) offers further potential savings. The sensor-based monitoring manager may not only be used to protect against break-ins, fire and other potential damage, but also to monitor the efficiency of the systems. By measuring the temperature, for instance, hot spots can be revealed and climate control can thus be improved.

A comprehensive approach

The RimatriX5 all-round solution for IT infrastructures combines rack, IT climate control, power supply and distribution, as well as security, monitoring and remote management in one system. The motto is “pay as you grow”.

A modular and scalable data centre can be easily and flexibly adapted to the company's new demands and so help avoid unnecessary costs due to planning errors in procurement and operation. This year, RimatriX5 was awarded the innovation prize in the “green IT” category by Initiative Mittelsand, an organisation representing small and medium-sized companies in Germany.

With RimatriX5, Rittal provides IT managers with exactly those tools they need to cut power consumption costs in their IT infrastructures. This saves money and helps to reduce environmental burdens.
