Engineers push for cloud standards

products and promote inter-cloud interoperability between cloud providers, reports GCN.

PC World says the state of cloud computing is comparable to the nascent , according to IEEE. Cloud computing is primed for explosive growth, but “without a flexible, common framework for interoperability, innovation could become stifled, leaving users with a siloed ecosystem,” the organisation warns in a statement.

The IEEE has kicked of its cloud initiative with two development projects: IEEE P2301, Draft Guide for Cloud Portability and Interoperability Profiles; and IEEE P2302, Draft Standard for Intercloud Interoperability and Federation. Working groups have been set up to develop these standards.

IEEE P2301 will provide profiles of existing and in-progress cloud computing standards in critical areas such as application, portability, management, and interoperability interfaces, as well as file formats and operation conventions.
