Engineers push for cloud standards

GCN.

PC World says the state of cloud computing is comparable to the nascent Internet, according to IEEE. Cloud computing is primed for explosive growth, but “without a flexible, common framework for interoperability, innovation could become stifled, leaving users with a siloed ecosystem,” the organisation warns in a statement.

The IEEE has kicked of its cloud initiative with two development projects: IEEE P2301, Draft Guide for Cloud Portability and Interoperability Profiles; and IEEE P2302, Draft Standard for Intercloud Interoperability and Federation. Working groups have been set up to develop these standards.

IEEE P2301 will provide profiles of existing and in-progress cloud computing standards in critical areas such as application, portability, management, and interoperability interfaces, as well as file formats and operation conventions.
