Enhanced security for Citrix MetaFrame Terminal Services

Johannesburg, 27 May 2003

Biodata IT South Africa, distributor of Utimaco Safeware products, has launched its newly released security solution for Citrix MetaFrame and Terminal Servers onto the local market.

"Despite the advantages of using Terminal Server solutions," says Christian Runte, director at Biodata IT. "Security is still a pending issue. Although basic system security such as a 128-bit encryption on an SSL authentication for the network session between server and client is provided, it is not at all sufficient. Utimaco released Safeguard LANCrypt 2.50 SR1 which offers a completely transparent encryption on the file directory in the Terminal Server environment."

The data is encrypted according to flexible rules for user groups, individual users, file names and types or directories. The seperation of network administrator and security administrator functions helps to guarantee a secure LAN parameter and encrypted data is protected during data transfer. Safeguard LANCrypt offers a secure data exchange between individual parts of a company by configurable encryption of data media (eg Floppy disks, CD-ROM, Zip, JAZ, etc) and its key file management facilities protect user-defined individual data access.

Moreover, SafeGuard LANCrypt supports direct data encryption on various server systems such as Windows NT/ Windows 2000 and Novell Netware.

"The important consideration here is that only the SafeGuard LANCrypt administrator can assign keys for files and directories. This means that not even the network administrator, despite having unrestricted access, can read data encrypted with the SafeGuard solution," adds Runte.
