Mohammed Valli Moosa, minister of Environmental Affairs and Tourism, has launched an Internet chat room, where members of the public can communicate with him directly.
Moosa launched the chat room last week, during the policy debate on the Environmental Affairs and Tourism budget vote in the National Council of Provinces (NCOP). The minister told NCOP members that the chat room would help to bridge the digital divide, improving two-way communication between himself and members of the public.
The chat room, at www.environment.gov.za, will be operational between 5pm and 6pm every Monday for the next three months. People wanting to chat live to the minister can register on the site at any stage.
In its official statement, the department says: "Members of the public are encouraged to participate in the live discussions for more insight into the work of the ministry and the department, and for an understanding of what drives the man in charge of this important government portfolio."
