Dr Mathews Phosa, non-executive chairman of EOH, one of South Africa`s largest consulting, technology and outsourcing companies, says conditions for sustainable development, namely improved government capacity, need to be addressed if the region is to promote economic growth and development.
Noting this key challenge for South Africa, Dr Phosa was speaking at EOH`s regional launch in East London where he says organisations such as EOH will play an important role in the sustainable development of the Eastern Cape region.
The economy of the Eastern Cape has grown faster than the national economy. With an approximate GDP of 8.2%, the region has a lot to offer South Africa. Dr Phosa says that aside from a need for broader IT services, EOH believes it is imperative that IT and business and IT and government are closely linked.
"EOH has the perfect credentials to do this effectively. It is simply about ensuring the effective, efficient and economical use of limited resources, while boosting social and economic development."
Defined, sustainable development reflects a process that meets the needs of the present without compromising the ability of future generations to meet their own needs. It is multidimensional and encompasses complex interactions between economic, social, political and environmental issues. It represents a development framework that makes the conquest of poverty, the goal of full employment and the fostering of a stable, safe and just society the overriding objectives of development policy and interventions.
"In a nut shell, it is a significant challenge and the public sector needs companies like EOH to assist them," says Dr Phosa.
Dion Ramoo, executive director of EOH, says the organisation has been working closely with government to implement legislation by operationalising strategy and improving financial management. Originally from KPMG Consulting, now EOH Consulting, Ramoo says there is great scope for EOH and its full depth and breadth of services.
"EOH`s business model based on a `design, build, operate` concept, enables EOH to embrace customers with products and services of both a business and technology perspective. It provides the unique combination of designing relevant business and technology solutions based on clients` needs, followed by solid implementation and finally outsourcing or maintenance services. This works well for both public and private sector customers. Delivering value in a sustainable manner and working in partnership with our clients is what we are all about."
Ramoo, who runs the regional office together with his senior management team of Jeff Walker and Mtheza Buya, is very upbeat about the roll-out of all EOH`s service offerings locally. He says the region is buzzing with productivity and believes EOH will continue to work closely with government to ensure effective, efficient and sustainable service delivery remains centre stage and with the private sector to ensure shareholder value is maximised.
