Ericsson says it has been awarded a R150 million contract by MTN to supply the cellular network operator with the GSM Pro network.
The agreement covers the supply of network servers and rugged mobile phones to MTN as well as the adding of advanced dispatch and group communications capabilities to MTN`s GSM network.
"GSM Pro provides the end-user with professional mobile radio functionality without building a special network, thereby offering the potential to reduce their capital and operating costs," says Tore Smedman, product manager for Professional Mobile Radio at Ericsson Radio Systems.
"The Pro concept is based on standard GSM technology so the GSM Pro user also gets access to new developments in GSM. GSM Pro customers can rely on continuous new developments and solid support," says Thomas Soneson, manager of product management for Ericsson SA.
All GSM Pro services will be offered through MTN`s coverage in SA. These include broadcast calls, group or conference calls, call dispatch and alert/alarm calling.
