Ericsson has announced the latest addition to its GPRS cellular phone range in the form of the T65 - a 2.5G phone targeted at the youth market.
The T65 sports a 1.2.1 WAP browser and can support connection speeds of up to 43.2kbps.
Ericsson expects the GPRS market to grow rapidly, and has previously announced the T39 and T68 GPRS phones. "GPRS is starting now. The technology is in place, the networks are stable and handsets are in the market," says Kurt Hellstr"om, president and CEO, Ericsson.
"My firm belief is that GPRS will accelerate over the rest of this year and next year, and that we are on track for volume deployment of 3G in 2003."
GPRS is not yet available in SA, although a joint announcement between Ericsson and MTN is expected this week.
The T65 is expected to be available in the fourth quarter, and features advanced messaging features through EMS (enhanced messaging service). EMS allows users to attach pictures, rings, sounds and animations to messages and allows formatting of text. The phone also supports e-mail and mobile chat.
The phone will be available in three colours - Cosmic blue, Polar blue and Stardust yellow - and has a six-row display.
