Eskom to increase productivity

By Compuware
Johannesburg, 28 Mar 2000

Utilities giant Eskom is set to increase the productivity of its IT department by at least 10 percent, following the implementation of advanced debugging and testing software.

According to the International Corporation (IDC), software developers spend about 50 percent of their time finding and fixing coding errors. Software errors, performance bottlenecks and testing problems are a fact of a programmer`s life.

"Out of an average forty hour week, approximately 20 hours are spent on debugging," says Grant Kirk, NuMega account manager at Compuware SA. "It does not have to be this time consuming though.

"The process can be speeded up with NuMega, a powerful suite of tools that helps developers deliver the fastest, most reliable components by offering a complete solution for the coding, debugging, testing, and deployment phases of the software development cycle."

Henriette Kieser, chief architect in Eskom`s applications division, says: "NuMega works well and it is clear the product will show a return on investment within two to three months.

"The software, which is currently being used by 20 developers at Eskom, helps us realise our goal of faster development," she says.

NuMega will enable Eskom to deliver reliable software faster. Faster development means lower development costs, and improved reliability means increased customer satisfaction.

Eskom`s IT department develops primarily in Microsoft Visual Basic, so the company has bought 20 seats of the Numega DevPartner for Visual Basic. NuMega is also available for developers using Microsoft Visual C++, Visual J++, Java, Borland`s Delphi and C++ Builder. In addition, NuMega also provides tools for device driver development.
