Local technology and digital lifestyle products distributor Esquire Technologies will release its own range of tablets for SA.
Under the brand name “Geeko”, the tablets will be targeted at the business, home and educational markets. The seven-inch tablet will run Android 2.3, while the higher-end 10-inch version will run the latest Android OS, Ice Cream Sandwich.
Esquire says the entry-level tablet for home and educational use will cost less than R2 000, while the professional tablet will go for under R3 000. “The business unit would also come standard with WiFi and 3G, while the units will boost user-friendliness by being able to link to the latest technology, such as high-definition multimedia interfaces via USB ports,” says Esquire.
The new range is said to be in production and will be available in June, and will be sold via Esquire's network of 12 500 resellers.
According to Esquire MD Asgar Mahomed, the company has invested “substantially” in the research and development of the Geeko range, and the tablets will come with features tailored to the local market.
“We will continue to distribute our other brand name tablet offerings to our reseller base, but we believe that our Geeko range will make quite an impact, because they are priced right and come with the required features,” says Mahomed.
Last month, Wise Tablets also launched its range of tablets tailored for the local market. The Wise Touch range starts at R1 995 for the seven-inch model, and features local content and applications.
