Lotus Development, a software company, have announced the release of eSuite, a Java based productivity software. The application set is coded in pure Java and the file format for eSuite applets is HTML.

Allan Scott, Product Marketing Manager at Lotus' Internet Applications Division said eSuite was aimed at users not requiring a fully-functional office package and that it broadend the market for productivity software. Scott said compatibility with office suite file formats including SmartSuite, Microsoft Office, and Correl Word perfect were on top of the list of upcoming enhancements as compatibility was an issue for all vendors.

The Java suite is comprised of eSuite WorkPlace and eSuite DevPack. eSuite WorkPlace is the desktop client that offers e-mail, Web browsing, terminal emulation and a set of compact productivity applets. eSuite DevPack is a graphical interface for coding applications, regardless of end user platform.

Scott said by releasing a Y2K-compliant office suite, consistently supporting development efforts in Java eSuite, together with the support of IBM in various areas Lotus was able to deliver a total desktop solution.
