Experts unleash Unbound
A group of experts has released an open source alternative to the BIND DNS server software that boasts higher performance and better security, says InfoWorld.
The new DNS server, Unbound 1.0, is a recursive DNS server, which is used by ISPs and enterprises to support DNS look-ups by users.
Unbound was released to open source developers by NLnet Labs, VeriSign, Nominet and Kirei. NLnet Labs, a non-profit research firm based in The Netherlands, will provide ongoing support for the software.
Virtualisation increases capacity
ESG Research surveyed 706 IT decision-makers from both SMEs and larger enterprises and surprisingly, 52% of the companies had already deployed server virtualisation (61% of the larger enterprises and 41% of the SMEs), and the remaining 48% planned to do so, states InfoStor.
Although one of the primary benefits of server virtualisation is consolidation of resources, the implementation of virtual servers often leads to significant increases in storage capacity. Over half (54%) of the virtual server adopters have experienced a net growth in capacity, while only 7% reported a net decrease.
ESG analysts believe those organisations reporting no change in capacity, or a decrease in capacity, may have benefited from storage consolidation or other infrastructure initiatives as part of their virtualisation deployment and/or may simply be in the early stages of implementation and have not yet reached the tipping point where they experience a net increase in storage capacity.
Acronis goes small
Acronis, a provider of storage management and disaster recovery software, has unveiled its new True Image for Microsoft Small Business Server, an application that enables IT managers in small businesses running Microsoft SBS to backup and restore both physical and virtual servers, says TMCnet.
The company has plans to introduce its Small Business Server backup application combined with Acronis Universal Restore, a program that allows users to restore an image to entirely different hardware.
Acronis True Image for Microsoft Small Business Server is the newest addition to Acronis' portfolio of business-class backup and recovery, migration and virtualisation products. The solution is designed specifically for small businesses that might not have full-time IT staff.
