The world's largest and most visited art museum, the Louvre, in Paris, France, has partnered with Nintendo to roll out Nintendo 3DS-based multimedia guides for its visitors.
“The audio guide will provide audio and visual tools, which will help visitors to understand and deepen their knowledge of the artwork and exhibits in place,” says Nintendo in a statement.
The AudioGuide Louvre Nintendo 3DS offers special features, such as 3D images and models (as well as HD imagery), animation and an interactive map.
The hi-tech guide includes a “self-guided tour” with 700 audio commentaries by the museum's curators and lecturers on the works of art. Visitors also have the option of two themed tours, namely the “Masterpieces” tour or “Egypt for all the family”.
Another feature is an “essential works” guide that highlights the major art works on the interactive map. Visitors can use this to create their own itinerary.
Barbaret adds that the new multimedia guide will make visiting the Louvre a more dynamic and rewarding experience, especially for those “not so familiar with a museum environment”.
While some have questioned whether the Nintendo console detracts from the real-life experience of visiting the museum, both the Louvre and Nintendo have emphasised it is intended to enhance and complement the experience.
The Louvre saw 8.9 million visitors last year, more than half of which were under the age of 30.
The guides are available in seven languages and cost EUR5 to rent.
