Exsol works Magic for FSB

Johannesburg, 11 Jan 2000

The Financial Services Board (FSB) has implemented the Magic rapid application and development suite for systems development and deployment.

Supplied by JSE-listed ECHold company Exsol, Magic has been installed alongside Exsol`s locally-developed Document Imaging System (DIS) to effectively manage multiple information streams in the organisation. Established in 1991, the FSB is an independent institution that regulates the South African financial services industry in the public interest.

"We are under constant pressure to deal with applications, changes and queries efficiently and effectively," says FSB general manager for management services Dr Ian Strydom. "There is always a demand for higher service levels in the industries we serve, coupled with the real need to contain our costs to those industries."

In the past, the FSB relied on the disparate functionality of Govnet (the mainframe system of the Department of Finance), a standalone document processing system and a UNIX client-server architecture. With Magic and DIS, the FSB has streamlined its process execution, ensured effective process and staff management through detailed management statistics, and taken document and information management to an entirely new level.

"The functionality of Magic and DIS was well demonstrated, and their integration was completely seamless," says Strydom. "By converting our legacy images to DIS, we protected our investment and prolonged its functionality following the transition to the new system."

"Magic gives us the scalability we need for future growth, the portability we were looking for in terms of platform independence, and the maintainability we are guaranteed with the backing of Exsol," he continues.

"DIS complements our infrastructure through its ease of integration with Magic and our MD&A Complete workflow system, and its compatibility with our previously-captured images."

Strydom expects the benefits of the system to be passed on to the FSB`s clients with immediate effect.

"Not only will our clients benefit from the shorter cycle time on our processes, but we can now offer them more consistent FSB decisions as a result of the regulated application of business rules, and consistent reference through the enquiry process," he concludes.
