Facebook gets VOIP service

PC World.

According to Facebook, Crisp App plans to introduce paid plans for calling regular phone numbers as well.

About.com points out that where the application falls short, is that it only works on a Mac computer, iPhone, iPod Touch and iPad running an iOS version 3.1.2 or later.

Facebook Messenger can be downloaded from Apple's App Store and builds upon Facebook's in-built chat client, allowing users to share pictures from their photo albums, browse their message history, view their friends profiles and use emoticons, notes The Next Web.

Gigaom says that Skype should be concerned about Facebook Messenger because Facebook has a much broader reach and is quickly becoming a communication hub.

It's expected that if Facebook Messenger can provide a smooth and fast VOIP experience, it could leapfrog its competitors.
