Sun Microsystems has unveiled the new Sun Fire V20z server, based on AMD's Opteron 64-bit processors and incorporating all the benefits of Sun's Java Enterprise System running on either the Solaris Operating System or Linux.
The vendor has also announced innovations to the Sun Fire B1600 blade platform, including the Sun Fire B200x dual processor x86 blade and Sun's N1 Grid Provisioning Server. The N1 technology allows businesses to mix, match and manage x86 and UltraSPARC blades running either the Solaris Operating System or Linux as a single pool of resources.
Dumisani Mtoba, senior systems engineer at Sun Microsystems SA, says the fruits of Sun's alliance with AMD include new products based on the 64-bit platform reaching the market rapidly. "The V20z is the first in a complete family of AMD Opteron processor-based systems, which will give businesses access to a range of highly affordable performance systems," he says.
Priced from less than $3 000, the Sun Fire V20z features dual AMD Opteron x86 32/64-bit processors and is capable of running Solaris x86 as well as Red Hat and SUSE Linux.
As part of the Sun and AMD alliance, both companies are collaborating to optimise the performance of the Solaris Operating System, the Java technology platform and development tools for Opteron-based systems.
"Sun and AMD also intend to work jointly with the Linux community to define and promote a 64-bit Unix-Linux Application Binary Interface (ABI) to enable further interoperability of enterprise applications," says Mtoba.
He explains that Unix or Linux applications will be able to run natively on any operating systems supporting this ABI.
