One of South Africa`s first Associated General Accountant (AGA) interns, Gillian Marshall (23) has completed her Qualifying Examination through the Randse Afrikaanse Universiteit (RAU) in June 2000 and is expected to be one of the first people to qualify as an AGA (after a three year internship) at the end of this year. Marshall completed her internship, focused on computerised accounting, at JSE-listed CS Holdings, an Authorised Training Organisation (ATO) for the South African Institute of Chartered Accountants (SAICA). CS Holdings, a leading consulting and IT services provider, is one of the pioneer companies participating in this programme, having embarked on the AGA project when it employed Marshall as an intern in 1998. "Qualified staff at CS Holdings mentor interns according to SAICA guidelines, to provide them with the material they require to become fully qualified AGAs," says Stefan Coetzer, MD of CS Holdings` Integrated Solutions division. "The AGA programme is designed to enable students to study accountancy in an IT environment and to make them proficient in this area of specialisation", Coetzer adds.
Marshall was the first AGA intern employed by CS Holdings as a consultant and her success during the first year led to the company employing more first year AGA students who are now in their second and first years. Marshall is justifiably proud of her achievements to date and feels that the AGA programme offers candidates an ideal combination of accounting and IT skills, and a balance of theory and practice that are much in demand. "I enjoy the stimulation of working directly with clients, where I use my knowledge of accounting requirements, business requirements as well as software functionality. I recommend the AGA programme for people who want comprehensive training in computerised accounting."
