First locally designed and manufactured fibre connect storage solution launched

Johannesburg, 08 Jul 1999

Local data storage manufacture Orca Technologies, a company in the CCH group, has announced the launch of its series of fibre connect data storage solutions. Following the gaining of the SABS`s CE certification, the launch of the fibre range places Orca Technologies on the springboard to international markets, and presents a cost effective, high performance fibre connect storage solution.

According to Orca Technologies marketing director, Rob Hulme, the fibre range has some significant design changes including multi-channel, hot swap redundant controllers, advanced RAID function and event management capabilities.

Hulme says that the fibre series reflects CCH`s philosophy of providing scalable solutions to suit growing businesses. "The 3001/4001 fibre range will offer users both fibre and LVD (low voltage differential) options to multiple hosts. This means that companies can opt for LVD to host (Orca 3001), and upgrade to a fibre interface (Orca 4001) when they are ready to do so, allowing them to prepare for future fibre growth, yet not have the expense of opting for the fibre option immediately."

The Orca 4001 can accommodate up to two fibre host channels, which in turn may be connected to fibre switches into a storage area network to provide multiple fibre host connectivity.

"Fibre interfaces and switches will come down in cost in the future. We believe that the LVD and fibre flexibility is unique to the Orca. With the multiple host connectivity option, the Orca is now a strong player in the storage area networking arena."

Dynamic RAID management functionality has been enhanced with facilities for on-the-fly recreation and reallocation of data space and full local and remote RAID management capabilities. Full-featured event notification is available via screen, pager, telephone and modem, with escalation alerts. Comprehensive logging of all event occurrences is also available.

"The Orca range has been designed to be a scalable, enterprise-strength solution which is affordable yet provides the capacity and throughput found only in very high capacity, costly solutions," Hulme maintains. "The series includes our own backplane design and a custom-designed enclosure which allows easy access for engineers and smoother hot-swap of components." "The Orca fibre systems will be our flagship products to break into international markets," Hulme concludes. "They have already achieved significant success at beta sites, where they have been benchmarked against other SCSI-based disk arrays, and have performed up to three times faster on throughput."
