Florida to expand virtual school
Starting next year, students entering high school would have to take at least one online course to graduate.
Scores of students across the state already take Internet-based classes, often to make up credits for courses they found difficult.
Particularly in rural counties, students turn to the Web for more exotic courses - such as Latin or Mandarin Chinese - that are not available at their schools.
According to WCTV, the Senate version is favoured by the proponents of virtual schools, because it is a bigger expansion, diminishing school district control over virtual programmes, expanding it to grades K-12 and allowing state-wide taxpayer-funded virtual schools for students in public or private schools or for home-schooled children.
Both laws require the online assessment for all state-wide exams, whether that student is in a virtual class or not.
If passed, virtual charter schools could form from anywhere in the world, says ABC-7. It would be up to the state department of education to approve each school.
E-learning provider Lee Virtual School is hosting a pair of information nights which they'll also be streaming online if parents and students are interested in learning more.
