FNB HomeLoans awards R2.2m Hyperion contract to GBI

Johannesburg, 08 Jul 2002

First National Bank (FNB) HomeLoans has awarded Global Technology Business Intelligence a Hyperion-based business intelligence platform implementation contract worth R2.2 million.

The Hyperion business intelligence platform is expected to deliver information to management efficiently, and to promote one version of the truth by centralising data.

MIS manager Charlene van Onselen says: "The need for real-time online access to information about our business, our customers and the industry is essential to ensure a strategic response to the changes in the home loan market."

FNB HomeLoans had been using the Hyperion Essbase multidimensional database, but found the OLAP (online analytical processing) platform on its own lacked the required power and functionality. This was largely due to the absence of tools needed to source information from FNB HomeLoans` OLAP environment.

In consultation with GBI, FNB HomeLoans has invested in Ascential`s DataStage extraction, transformation and loading solution; and Hyperion`s Enterprise Integration Server and Analyzer.

These products allow integration of data from heterogeneous sources to be consolidated in a centralised data warehouse, from which future data queries will be extracted and processed.

"Previously, our information extraction process was cumbersome and manual, offering our users limited flexibility," says Van Onselen. "Hyperion Analyzer provides true business intelligence by empowering the user at his desktop to develop business environment scenarios and track trends."

This will reduce users` reliance on the MIS department to produce multiple reports and to drill down to account level if required.

Management will be able to track profitability, productivity and performance of FNB HomeLoans, enabling true strategic decision-making. The new business intelligence platform will facilitate users in making informed decisions based on the centralised data.

Alwin Swales, product management director at GBI, says: "South African financial services groups are turning to business intelligence software as a means of controlling risk and building customer intimacy."
