FNB tightens control over IT assets with Peregrine

Johannesburg, 13 Dec 2000

First National (FNB) Corporate Bank expects to save more than R1 million a year through improved management of its IT assets following its implementation of Peregrine Systems` infrastructure solution.

Peregrine, supplied and implemented by sole distributor CCH Enterprise Solutions, is a complete infrastructure management solution that tracks and supports all assets through their entire lifecycle. The functionality of Peregrine provides FNB Corporate with a single system effectively to manage all aspects of its IT assets, including asset discovery, asset control, helpdesk, lease and contract management, and Web access.

Darryl Rose, financial manager: IT at FNB Corporate Bank, says: "In line with the FirstRand Group`s strategy of allowing each business to deploy and manage their IT systems autonomously, we have taken ownership of our own IT systems.

"We needed a new system to manage these assets proactively because the current mainframe-based system lacked some of the functionality we needed." The company will initially use Peregrine to manage around 4 000 IT assets - including 1 500 desktop PCs, servers, and notebooks, software licences, and a host of peripherals - at its Johannesburg head office and branches in Pretoria, Durban and Cape Town.

Peregrine manages every phase of the IT lifecycle, from inventory, installation, and deployment, through to software licensing, consumables, upgrades, moves, configuration changes or additions, and finally retirement. FNB Corporate selected Peregrine after an extensive evaluation of several competitive products. Peregrine met the initial requirements as well as offering additional functionality not available in other products, says Rose.

He adds that the strong local project management, implementation and support skills CCH Enterprise Solutions offers were another important factor in choosing the Peregrine solution.

"The Peregrine implementation will give us the ability to answer the questions facing all businesses today, such as: What are my assets? Where are they? How much are they costing us? How well are they performing? And how well do they support our business mission?" adds Rose.

Full lifecycle asset management has become a burning issue for businesses around the world, says Allen Lewis, Peregrine Systems GM at CCH Enterprise Solutions. "E-business needs a solid, properly functioning infrastructure. Bringing this infrastructure under control, from to disposal, is what sets Peregrine apart."
