FTI offers advanced training in IS Project Management

Johannesburg, 07 Dec 2009

Recent business reports have focused on the importance of project management and how it has grown into a fundamental tool for success over the years.

Technology has allowed organisations to become more streamlined, and reduced the need to have lots of management layers. The burden of work in many organisations has shifted towards projects, and the need for better project-based methods has increased. It is becoming vital for many staff to possess project management skills, and the role of the project manager in driving projects to completion is growing in importance all the time.

While the project management profession is well defined and well understood in engineering terms, these so-called hard skills are only part of the attributes of a project manager of business or ICT-related projects, where the softer skills of team leadership, conflict resolution and interpersonal communication are important to project success.

Faculty Training Institute's Diploma in IS Project Management is a five-month part-time programme aimed at prospective or existing project managers who want to develop or enhance their overall project management skills. A key distinguishing factor in the course is on developing a holistic project manager, who has balance between the hard skills of planning, controlling and executing projects, and the softer skills of leading teams, negotiating compromises and obtaining stakeholder buy-in. The course is applicable to project managers in both technical and business environments, and is aimed at the more experienced delegate who is seeking a path to professional project management qualification rather than the entry-level delegate who has limited work experience.

FTI is a Registered Education Provider with the Project Management Institute South Africa and the course covers the Project Management Institute's (PMI) Project Management Body of Knowledge (PMBOK).

“FTI has been offering courses in this space for over 20 years, with over 1 000 project managers having graduated from the Diploma in IS Project Management,” says Steve Erlank, Managing Director of Faculty Training Institute. “The Diploma is a key component of our strategy to offer a comprehensive range of training in key professional roles in the knowledge economy, across the whole of South Africa. Our PM portfolio now covers a range of skills from entry-level project administration or business project management, right up to courses that prepare delegates to sit the Project Management Professional certification examination offered by the PMI.

In addition to its project management portfolio, FTI offers courses for a wide range of professional knowledge roles, including business analysis, systems analysis, enterprise architecture, quality assurance and testing, and technical writing. A complete course outline of the Diploma in IS Project Management can be found here.

Faculty Training Institute

Faculty Training Institute (FTI) is a private training company that specialises in offering world-class career-oriented training courses for professional knowledge workers, mainly in the corporate world. Focusing on mid-career rather than entry-level training, FTI specialises in project management, business analysis, systems analysis, technical writing, it management, enterprise architecture, and technical writing training. It offers a variety of training options, including public or in-house, part-time or full-time courses.

FTI was founded in 1989 by five experienced lecturers from the Department of Information Systems at the University of Cape Town, who perceived a gap between the technical or entry level training offered by most private training companies, and the longer degree programmes offered by tertiary institutions. During the past 20 years, FTI has expanded its successful product offerings from the initial two diploma courses into growing range of diplomas and short courses that serve the career needs of corporate South Africa.

In October 2006, FTI was awarded Charter Endorsed Education Provider status with the International Institute for Business Analysis (IIBA). It is one of a handful of training organisations worldwide that has achieved this status. FTI is a Registered Education Provider with the Project Management Institute.
