Fujitsu optimises backup and archiving with new appliance

News facts:
The new Fujitsu ETERNUS CS High End V5.1 delivers:
* Optimised support for backup and archiving of NAS Storage with Virtual Network Storage (ViNS) functionality
* 50 percent more performance and 100% more storage capacity - extending its market-leading scalability
* Additional disaster resilience with additional capabilities for long-distance data replication.

Johannesburg, 13 Apr 2012

Fujitsu has introduced the new generation of ETERNUS CS High End, allowing businesses to extensively consolidate and simplify their backup and archiving systems for mainframes, UNIX and industry standard servers on a large scale.

New ViNS (Virtual Network Storage) functionality provides easy integration with enterprise systems for file archiving and migration of older files. Critically, the appliance also offers an easy way for enterprises to introduce disaster resilience for backup and archiving.

Business benefits

With the ETERNUS CS High End data protection appliance, Fujitsu has already helped many customers to optimise service levels for data protection in terms of capacity, performance and cost, with around 900 installations in large data centres around the globe.

ETERNUS CS High End 5.1 is also the perfect solution to meet customer requirements for archiving, including compliant archiving and long-term data retention.

The newly added ViNS functionality supports Active Directory and LDAP (Lightweight Directory Access Protocol) environments, allowing an easy integration with enterprise systems for archiving files or for migrating older, unused files out of the primary NAS storage system. The massive file system on ViNS (two billion files and no file size limitation) allows major consolidation of backup and archiving file data on disk.

The appliance also enables the most appropriate media mix of disk, tape and deduplicated disk to be used, in combination with different replication scenarios, to deliver defined service level agreements, and at the same time cope with budget constraints.

To drive faster and more efficient data protection, Fujitsu now enables enterprises to reduce the number of point solutions and to consolidate and centralise their backup, restore, archiving, and handle disk and tape with one appliance. However, for customers needing to optimise only their archive environment, two new ViNS-only models are available. For most of the other ETERNUS CS High End models, ViNS comes in addition to other desirable ETERNUS CS High End capabilities for the backup consolidation in Mainframe, UNIX and x86 systems.

In support of large-scale consolidation, scalability of the new version has been significantly enhanced in terms of capacity and performance. By scaling up 16 RAID systems, the internal disk cache can now store up to 3.6PB of data with excellent write and read performance. To increase performance by 50%, up to 10 processor nodes can now work in parallel. This makes ETERNUS CS High End the most scalable data protection appliance on the market.

ETERNUS CS High End already offers leading functionality for disaster recovery, ensuring efficient data protection by combining two site cache mirroring, multiple data copies and even cascadable data replication. To optimise long-distance replication, native TCP/IP support is added in addition to Fibre-

Channel, and data can be compressed to reduce network bandwidth requirements and costs.

ETERNUS CS High End is the backbone of Fujitsu's Data Protection strategy, supported by a comprehensive set of services, starting with installation and maintenance up to Managed Services. The Fujitsu portfolio comprises a complete set of best-of-breed products to build and operate efficient data protection environments.

Supporting quotes:

Jochen Br"unger, Head of ik4 Production and Infrastructure, Continentale Krankenversicherung AG:
“Data protection and the flexible and easy management of data are highly prioritised in our IT. That's why we now repeatedly and successfully use ETERNUS CS as a backup solution combined with the new NAS interface. The support received from Fujitsu during the migration to the new platform was outstanding.”

Marcus Schneider, Head of Product Development Group Storage at Fujitsu Technology Solutions:
“Big business is crying out for new data protection concepts covering both backup and archiving. They need this to thrive despite the ever-growing volume of enterprise data, data legislation compliance, and challenging service level agreements, not to mention the impact of recent natural disasters. Archiving is an integral part of data protection, and plays an important role in handling information and optimising the IT infrastructure. That's why the world's fastest backup and restore appliance - ETERNUS CS High End 5.1 - now also integrates archiving for enterprises on the same appliance.”
