Fujitsu Services on 29 May welcomed 14 girls to its Rivonia offices for a day at its headquarters. On arrival, the girls, aged between 16 and 18 years, were treated to breakfast with Fujitsu management after which Priya Prakasim, Human Resources Manager, introduced them to the organisation.
The girls went on to undertake a number of activities, including a visit to the Fujitsu Data Centre and time in the 7799 call centre which supports 17 000 desktop users across Europe. After a first-class lunch, the students spent the afternoon work-shadowing various members of staff, spending time in HR, finance, project management, IT and marketing.
A number of the girls are members of the 15-strong "Fujitsu Learning Through Experience Programme" who entered the year's programme in January 2008 and who will attend sessions weekly in Rivonia for the next nine months.
Lumka Mefilike is the current Managing Director for the learning through experience company set up by the 15 students from Minerva High and East Bank High in Alexandra.
Nikki Carnegie-Floyd, Head Of Marketing, said: "Fujitsu Services takes very seriously their responsibility to the local communities and as such, were delighted to host the girls for the day. It is imperative that girls are given the opportunity to experience a day in the life working at a corporate.
"We must encourage more ladies to make a career for themselves in ICT. When I came into this industry more than 20 years ago, I was one of very few females. I have seen some changes over the years; however, we really need to further ensure we keep encouraging young ladies to be part of this ever-changing and exciting field of business."
