CentricStor, Fujitsu Siemens Computers` powerful virtual tape appliance that supports the heterogeneous world of predominant operating systems and backup applications, has added support for IBM iSeries Servers and its OS/400 operating system and backup applications.
Developed by Fujitsu Siemens Computers, CentricStor is the first and only self-contained virtual tape appliance that supports the predominant operating system environments and backup applications as well as major tape automation platforms and tape devices from such prominent companies as StorageTek, ADIC and IBM.
CentricStor enables today`s complex data centres to consolidate their tape environments onto fewer real tape devices and tape libraries while shrinking backup windows and dramatically reducing data recovery times. The net result is a less capital and resource intensive environment that saves money and time and reduces business risk.
Support for OS/400 environments expands on the previously supported operating environments including Unix, Windows, Linux, MVS, BS2000 and others. Open Systems backup applications now supported by CentricStor include Tivoli Storage Manager, NetBackup, NetWorker and Data Protector.
The iSeries platforms may attach to CentricStor using a variety of backup products. The currently supported backup products are: IBM- BRMS/400, TSM; Help/Systems- ROBOT/SAVE; Sopra- SYSOTEK; PM4C-SAVE/400; LXI-MMS; and standard OS/400 commands. Multiple iSeries servers with different management software may all attach to a single CentricStor system.
"With the support of OS/400 Fujitsu Siemens Computers is continuing our long-term strategy of supporting all major platforms with our virtual tape technology," says Sean Wainer, Product Manager Enterprise Computing at Fujitsu Siemens Computers. "The design of CentricStor with its open architecture allows us to respond in time on additional market demands. Beside the seamless integration into backup solutions from leading vendors, CentricStor will be the central focus point of efficient information lifecycle management for all data protection challenges of today`s enterprises."
CentricStor is available from the distributor PeakData in the US. "The power of CentricStor is its ability to support most of the operating systems and backup applications that enterprise customers may have, thereby assuring high performance, disk-to-disk-type performance with the efficiency and assurance of tape integrated into an overall solution," said Mike Holland, Vice-President and General Manager, CentricStor Business Unit, PeakData, Inc.
"Now with iSeries, we can answer consolidation needs with full virtual tape coverage for all IBM servers because zSeries, pSeries, and xSeries were already in place," Holland added.
CentricStor background
CentricStor is the name given to Fujitsu Siemens Computers` "Virtual Tape Appliance", which is used to consolidate the magnetic tape processing. The open storage solution is employed for mainframes and for open system environments running Unix and Windows. CentricStor employs virtual tape drives to provide all linked systems with a multitude of high-performance and permanently available backup and archiving resources over the storage area network. This universal connectivity enables different servers and applications to access the virtual archive simultaneously, without the need for a real tape drive for each individual system.
CentricStor integrates transparently into existing IT environments, making it unnecessary to modify existing application and backup scenarios. Since CentricStor replaces the direct link to the real storage peripherals, upgrading to the latest drive technology without affecting the host systems and applications poses no problems.
