Fujitsu Siemens Computers enhances PRIMERGY blade ecosystem for optimisation at all levels

Johannesburg, 20 Jun 2007

Among the challenges facing IT managers is that they are tasked with continuously improving performance and reducing energy consumption in their data centres.

Fujitsu Siemens Computers, the leading European IT provider, offers products that meet these challenges.

The already excellent ratio of performance to energy consumption offered by the PRIMERGY blade server system has been improved by the new server blade BX620 S4.

It is based on the latest Quad-Core Intel Xeon processor 5300 series, which has particularly low power consumption, yet delivers top-level performance. The new PRIMERGY BX620 S4 has achieved a benchmark world-record result for dual-socket servers on the two-tier SAP Sales and Distribution (SD) Standard Application Benchmark.

On 16 May 2007, the PRIMERGY BX620 S4 achieved the following result on the SAP SD Standard Application Benchmark: 1 870 SAP SD Benchmark users and an average dialogue-response time of 1.95 seconds.[1]

The enhanced PRIMERGY Blade Ecosystem combines the blade server BX600 S3 with a new midplane and optimised performance which provides the prerequisites for much higher input/output (I/O) throughput. These new servers are available in Europe, the Middle East and Africa (EMEA).

The PRIMERGY Blade Ecosystem BX600 S3 and its components optimise both LAN and SAN networking; a larger and faster number of communication interfaces can be used via the new server blade PRIMERGY BX620 S4. The midplane of the new blade server BX600 S3 is an important feature that acts as the interface between the server blades and all the other system components. This passive midplane now offers interfaces for 60 Gigabit Ethernet cables (compared with 20 in the BX600 S2) and end-to-end Fibre Channel connections with speeds of up 4Gbit/s.

Users experience high I/O throughput at all server levels, faster access to data, quicker applications as well as efficient and stable communication between the server blades and the other system components. This strengthens the position of the BX600 S3 Blade Ecosystem as an optimal consolidation and virtualisation platform.

The increase in throughput rates in the storage sector (SAN) is the result of powerful Fibre Channel switch and pass-through blades. There also is complete support from a new 4Gbit/s Fibre Channel Mezzanine Card Host Bus Adapter. Six Gigabit Ethernet LAN channels on-board with iSCSI support triple the number of standard LAN connections, as well as the optional operation and/or booting memory subsystems via iSCSI. iSCSI technology increases cost efficiency by using existing (Ethernet) infrastructures and administration expertise. At the same time, it combines the advantages of Fibre Channel based SAN solutions and IP-based NAS solutions.

Thanks to its multiple functions, the PRIMERGY Blade Ecosytem BX600 S3 is the ideal choice for a wide range of application areas - from demanding terminal server farms to high-performance databases and application servers in the data centre. Its "smart architecture" helps to flawlessly link and use existing and future hardware components without any problem, protecting investments and maximising return on investment.

[1] The two-tier SAP SD Standard Application Benchmark was conducted with a Fujitsu Siemens Computers PRIMERGY Model BX620 S4 server (2 processors/8 cores/8 threads) with Quad-Core Intel Xeon Processor X5355, 2.66GHz, 64 KB L1 cache per core and 4MB L2 cache per 2 cores and 32GB main memory running the SAP ERP 2005 application, Windows Server 2003 Enterprise Edition and SQL Server 2005.
