Fujitsu Siemens Computers FibreCAT SX40 storage subsystem guarantees highly available applications on PRIMERGY servers

Small and medium-sized enterprises profit from attractively priced, easy expansion of their server storage capacity via direct attached storage
Johannesburg, 05 Apr 2007

Fujitsu Siemens Computers recently announced the introduction of FibreCAT SX40, a new storage subsystem that can easily and reliably expand the hard disk capacity of directly connected PRIMERGY servers.

This also makes this new device ideal for small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs), which depend on the reliability and constant availability of their IT to an increasing extent, but are forced to calculate with limited budgets at the same time.

The new direct attached storage (DAS) solution offers them a secure platform to store and run such business-critical applications as databases, e-commerce applications or e-mail servers with high reliability.

With up to 12 SAS (Serial Attached SCSI) hard disks and a maximum storage capacity of 3.6 terabytes, the FibreCAT SX40 offers an easy, attractively priced way to enter into the family of FibreCAT SX storage systems, which also include the RAID storage systems FibreCAT SX60 and FibreCAT SX80.

"IT has become a deciding competitive factor for SMEs as well. Nowadays, no company can afford to have malfunctions or downtime for its business-critical applications or data," said Jens-Peter Seick, Senior Vice-President, Enterprise Business at Fujitsu Siemens Computers. "With the combination of our PRIMERGY servers and the new FibreCAT SX40 storage subsystem, we offer users an economically priced, highly available platform that can be flexibly adapted to current requirements and is easy to use."

PRIMERGY servers and FibreCAT SX40 - an ideal combination

The FibreCAT SX40 was specifically developed to easily expand the storage capacity of the PRIMERGY server, as needed. The system design complies with the industry standard servers made by Fujitsu Siemens Computers and the new storage solution was also integrated into the PRIMERGY server management concept.

Fujitsu Siemens Computers announced the new models in its PRIMERGY server family at the end of last year. These servers are based on the new "Quad-Core Intel Xeon 5300 series" processors and offer outstanding performance with reduced power consumption and enhanced reliability. The PRIMERGY RX300 rack server, for example, supports all the demanding applications in companies and data centres.

The power consumption ranges from 40 to 120 watts per processor socket, depending on the processor configuration itself. Its high system stability also guarantees a redundant, hot-plug power supply and fans, as well as hot-plug hard disk drives. Highly available

The new FibreCAT SX40 system is easily able to match the PRIMERGY server high availability skills. The most important components, including the hard disks, fans and power supply modules, are redundant in design and can be replaced while the system is up and running. The quick and easy replacement of these parts optimises the availability of the subsystem as well as of the business-critical data. Thanks to its integration into the PRIMERGY ServerView Suite, the device is easy to administrate and monitor.

The FibreCAT SX40 is available as a 19-inch rack insert with a height of 2U. Cascading up to three devices provides users with a maximum of up to 10.8 terabytes of external hard disk capacity.
