Fujitsu Siemens Computers has installed a powerful PRIMEPOWER-based server solution for Belgian telco, Telenet, in just four weeks.
Based on two PRIMEPOWER 2000 servers, each running on 38 SPARC 64GP processors, the solution has consolidated Telenet`s critical applications within one `always-on` system, which will scale flexibly to support Telenet`s future growth.
"Since these two servers will host most of our company`s vital applications, it was essential for us to choose a reliable partner and top quality products. We are convinced that this new IT infrastructure will enable us to reinforce our position and achieve our strategic objectives," commented Bart Van Dorpe, Director Business Architecture at Telenet.
`Always-on`, secure infrastructure for carrier-grade services Carrier-grade services - be they voice, data or multimedia - rely on a highly available, secure IT infrastructure. To succeed in the competitive telco market, where customers are accustomed to quality of service (QoS) voice telephony, server crashes are unacceptable.
Fujitsu Siemens Computers` strategic focus on business-critical computing ensured that its powerful PRIMEPOWER solution met Telenet`s availability and security needs. Offering 38 SPARC 64GB processors per server, each running at 560MHz on the Solaris 8 operating system, the Fujitsu Siemens Computers` solution was much more powerful than that proposed by the competitor. The PRIMEPOWER servers can be set up in a highly secure cluster, based on systematic redundancy of all vital components.
Both PRIMEPOWER servers offer dynamic partitioning options, allowing Telenet to consolidate its strategic IT applications within one configuration rather than running these on separate servers. A minimum of six virtual computers can be created within each server in order to host different applications.
According to Jens-Peter Seick, Executive Director Line of Business Unix at Fujitsu Siemens Computers: "Telenet`s decision shows the strength of Fujitsu Siemens Computers` offering for business-critical computing. We offer our customers more than state-of-the-art technology - we also provide genuine added value in the fields of security, availability and integration."
High scalability supports future growth
Telenet currently provides telephony, Internet and multimedia services via cable television networks to 250 000 Belgian customers - business and residential - and expects its subscriber base to grow to 1.25 million by 2002. This huge increase will require a considerable boost to the processing power of the PRIMEPOWER servers - up to 256 (2 x 128) processors from the existing 76 (2 x 38).
The PRIMEPOWER solution is highly scalable to support this rapid growth - new processors can be mixed in with existing ones, allowing Telenet to increase its processing power as customer demand rises.
Speedy implementation
Fujitsu Siemens Computers` professional services ensured the speedy implementation of the PRIMEPOWER solution. While an enterprise computing solution on this scale would usually take eight weeks to complete, Fujitsu Siemens Computers delivered the first system to Telenet just two weeks after the contract was signed, with the second system following two weeks later.
Potential future developments
As well as flexibly increasing the processing power of the existing PRIMEPOWER solution, Fujitsu Siemens Computers may incorporate EMC storage systems into an overall enterprise computing solution in the future, further improving Telenet`s services to its customers.
