Fujitsu Siemens Computers is equipping all Lufthansa pilots with Lifebooks

Johannesburg, 22 Aug 2001

Fujitsu Siemens Computers has been awarded a ?6.5 million contract to provide Lufthansa with mobile computers in its cockpits. The 3 500 Lifebook systems will be used for time-efficient calculation of the propulsive force before take off and for provision of electronic library, flight preparation and training modules.

"After an extensive evaluation process, Fujitsu Siemens Computers offered us the most convincing product and global service concept," said Rolf Mueller, project manager and aircraft captain of Lufthansa.

Previously, the calculation had to be done by hand using huge aeroplane flight manuals and lists. The new system contains current information of all Lufthansa aircraft, airports and weather conditions. Computer-based training and airport instruction lessons are also available on the system. Update terminals at airports will facilitate refreshing of the mobile database.

"Our vision is to enable the user to access their applications whenever they want, wherever they want, from the device of their choice," said Rami Raulas, Vice President, Mobile Business of Fujitsu Siemens Computers.
