Fujitsu Siemens Computers presents new high-end handheld PDA for pocket-sized office

The modular Pocket LOOX 710 and Pocket LOOX 720 are brimming with features for business customers
Johannesburg, 24 Aug 2004

The new Pocket LOOX 700 Series from Fujitsu Siemens Computers gives professional users a companion for personal information management and a platform for mobile access to business applications. A variety of technical innovations, such as the Intel PXA272 processor and the Microsoft operating system Windows Mobile 2003 for Pocket PC Second Edition, turn the new handheld into a pocket-sized office.

Handhelds of the Pocket LOOX 700 Series are equipped with a slot for SD I/O and for CF cards, making them especially flexible in terms of use and extendibility. The VGA screen of the Pocket LOOX 720 with its 640 x 480 resolution provides a crystal-clear display and supports output in landscape format. As a result, Pocket LOOX users can now use numerous standard applications which previously required a notebook or PC. The built-in 1.3-megapixel camera with integrated flash and video function makes the Pocket LOOX 720 interesting for users who have never considered using a handheld in their work environment.

Andrew Tsobanoglou, Product Manager Professional Products, says: "People who travel a lot for both business and pleasure demand high standards of their equipment. Finding information on the Internet, writing e-mails, synchronising address databases, securely accessing corporate applications, just listening to music, or taking and viewing photos or video footage - all this and more is easy with the reliable handhelds of the Pocket LOOX 700 Series, which weigh less than 180 grams."

Communication

"Communication via different channels is becoming more and more important in both professional and personal environments. The Pocket LOOX 700 Series offers WLAN (IEEE 802.11b WiFi certified), Bluetooth 1.2, and Consumer Infrared. Users who want to be reachable anywhere can use the optionally available CONNECT2AIR GSM/GPRS card to establish connections via GPRS for surfing the Internet or logging on to the company network."

As Internet telephony becomes increasingly popular as an alternative to traditional transmission channels, the Pocket LOOX 700 Series has been fitted with a special speaker which, together with the integrated microphone and the corresponding add-on software, transforms the Pocket LOOX 700 Series into one of the first VOIP systems. With its 3.5mm headphone socket and long battery life, the Pocket LOOX 700 Series acts as an MP3 player. Storage media such as the Memorybird or Storagebird from Fujitsu Siemens Computers expand the storage capacity of the Pocket LOOX 700 Series via the USB Host 1.1 to well into the gigabyte range.

Performance

The new Intel PXA272 processor and the Microsoft operating system Windows Mobile 2003 for Pocket PC Second Edition speed up applications and reduce power consumption. Users can choose between four different settings, depending on whether maximum performance or maximum battery life is more important to them, or whether they want the handheld to choose the setting automatically according to the workload.

Battery concept

The replaceable 1640-mAh battery provides enough power for up to 12 hours` uninterrupted use, after which a freshly charged battery can be fitted in next to no time. The docking station of the Pocket LOOX 700 Series serves as a charger for a replacement battery, and during the change, which can take up to 30 minutes, the built-in buffer battery ensures that no data is lost.

Additional software

Additional downloadable software for the Pocket LOOK will be available from the Web site (www.pocketloox-choice.com).

Differences between Pocket LOOX 710 and Pocket LOOX 720

Both systems fall into the category of high-business handhelds. In addition to the functions of the Pocket LOOX 710, the Pocket LOOX 720 offers a digital camera with 1.3 million pixels, a VGA-resolution display, and a more powerful processor.
