As the central task of the corporate IT infrastructure, business-critical computing requires not only failure-proof servers, but also the highest levels of security and availability for mission-critical data.
With the many different servers operating in today`s data centres, a reliable backup concept is more than ever a vital component of any responsible data management system. With its CentricStor Virtual Tape Library, Fujitsu Siemens Computers offers a solution that has proven itself many times in mainframe environments (BS2000/ OSD, MVS).
Effective immediately, CentricStor is also available for Open Systems platforms.
Initially, this includes Fujitsu Siemens Computers` own Solaris/Sparc PRIMEPOWER servers and Reliant Unix-based RM systems, as well as Intel-based PRIMERGY servers running under the Linux operating system. Other Unix platforms can be supported upon request. A connection for Windows/NT/2000 servers is planned for later this year.
CentricStor is linked to the servers over a SAN (storage area network) and acts like a library with up to 256 logical tape drives and hundreds of thousands of (logical) tapes. This design enables new and less complex concepts for enterprise data backup solutions. At its back-end, CentricStor employs real libraries from ADIC or StorageTek with few, but robust and high-performance tape drives. Existing libraries can also be used.
This virtualisation concept provides many benefits with respect to manageability, high availability and disaster recovery. It is also a major contributor to lowering the TCO (total cost of ownership). You can add new tape technologies like LTO (Linear Tape Open) without having to make changes to your servers or their data backup software. Thanks to features like dual save (mirrored tape cartridges), multiple library support and volume groups, the storage manager can be certain that the data is safe, secure, and available.
Especially in the computer world dominated by open systems, consolidation has proven itself as a tool for limiting costs and increasing reliability. The same concept is increasingly being applied to storage systems. As Dr Helmut Beck, Vice President Line of Business Storage of Fujitsu Siemens Computers, explained, the CentricStor Virtual Tape Library is increasingly viewed as an excellent tool for storage consolidation: "CentricStor is starting a new era for nearline storage. We are now doing for tapes what happened about 10 years ago with the introduction of intelligent disk storage subsystems. The virtualisation of tapes will substantially reduce the TCO of storage. We are proud to be the first on the market with a product of this type."
Unlike competitors` products, CentricStor features substantial independence of server platforms and library manufacturers. In a SAN, CentricStor forms the basis for a secure and economical data backup and archiving solution.
Thanks to its high system scalability and the continuing developments in technology and functionality, CentricStor grows with your requirements and protects your investment for the long-term.
