Full Acer Altos line receives red hat certification

Johannesburg, 10 Apr 2000

The Entire Acer Altos line of commercial servers has received certification for the Red Hat 6.1 Linux operating system.

This includes the popular Acer Altos 500, 1100E, 12000, and 21000 models and follows the Acer Group receiving its first Red Hat certification, for the AcerPower Series, last year.

According to Brian Bogaard, general manager of Acer in Africa, the past year has seen significant gains in industry recognition for both Red Hat Software, the leading provider of Linux, and for Linux itself.

"The popular open-source operating system implemented by Linus Torvalds from the UNIX operating system has achieved growing mainstream acceptance in the non-programmer community, thanks in part to its multi-platform functionality. This makes it a viable contender for the third operating system position alongside Windows and Mac systems," he explains.

"Simplicity in the Linux OS command and implementation interface make it especially well suited to commercial computing environments.

"Altos users need a stable, reliable, and OS-compatible server system. Certifying our server products for Red Hat 6.0 confirms our commitment to them," he adds.

The Altos 500 provides solid, entry-level price-to-performance leadership, while the 1100E affords growing business with a winning combination of scalability and value.

The Altos 12000 features award-winning performance across a multitude of departmental-class tasks and applications. The fourth recent recipient of the Red Hat certification, the world-class Altos 21000, is designed to power major task-intensive server environments.

"Altos will include Red Hat certification in other upcoming product releases, as well as integrating the OS itself into future solution-based system configurations," Bogaard concludes.
